How to Check Property Slope and Elevation for FREE
Slope and elevation affect your build costs, flood risk, and what you can do with a parcel. Here are 4 free tools to check before you buy — no site visit required.
Knowing the slope and elevation of a land parcel tells you a lot about whether you can build, where you can build, and what development will cost. Here's how to check it for free before you spend anything on a site visit or contractor.
Why Slope and Elevation Matter
A property with steep slopes requires more expensive foundations, may need retaining walls, and can limit where structures can be placed. Low elevation can indicate flood risk. Understanding the terrain before you buy prevents expensive surprises after you close.
Free Tool 1: USGS National Map
The USGS National Map viewer at apps.nationalmap.gov lets you view topographic maps and elevation data for any parcel in the US. You can view contour lines (which show slope steepness), download elevation data, and create elevation profiles across any line you draw on the map. It's free and covers the entire country.
Free Tool 2: Google Earth Elevation Profile
In Google Earth Pro (free to download), you can draw a path across a property and right-click to show the elevation profile. This gives you a cross-section view showing elevation changes from one end of the parcel to the other.
Free Tool 3: FEMA Flood Map + Elevation Together
Cross-reference the USGS elevation data with FEMA's flood map. Low-elevation areas near water are higher flood risk. High-elevation areas on the same parcel may be completely buildable. This combination gives you a much clearer picture than either tool alone.
Free Tool 4: County GIS Maps
Most counties have GIS maps that include topographic and elevation layers. Search for your county name plus GIS map, and look for a terrain or topographic layer option. The data quality varies by county but is often very good for Florida, Arizona, and Colorado parcels.
Bottom Line
Before you buy, spend 20 minutes on the USGS National Map and your county's GIS system. Steep slopes and low elevations both affect what you can build and what it will cost. Know before you commit.
